GRADUATION PARTY & CEREMONY INFO

The largest group of NSMS students will walk in the upcoming School of Engineering convocation. We want to celebrate all NSMS graduates! We are currently planning an event on Thursday, May 10th beginning at 4:00 PM at the UNM Faculty Club. Please, SAVE THE DATE! The event will celebrate all past and current graduates. We hope you will mark your calendars and join us.

Graduation Details (for the curious):

To the best of my knowledge all graduates (18!) have opted to walk. So, come and cheer them on!

UNM School of Engineering Spring Convocation
Date: May 11, 2012
Time: Ceremony begins at 7:00 PM
Location: Kiva Auditorium, Albuquerque Convention Center, downtown

The School of Engineering Convocation Ceremony
The Convocation is the School's own ceremony specifically to honor graduates, in the presence of their family and friends. The ceremony opens with a formal processional led by the School's Deans, Department Chairs, visiting dignitaries, faculty, and graduating students. Short remarks are given by the Dean and others, followed by the keynote speaker and student speakers.

Graduate Recognition
After the speakers address the audience, each graduating student is individually recognized on stage. Bachelors candidates are called by name and greeted by the Dean and their departmental faculty and staff as they exit the stage. Masters and doctoral students are greeted by the Dean and his/her Department Chair or Program Director, and then hooded by his/her major professor or designee.

Graduating Students
Family and friends are cordially invited to attend. Cap and gown is the appropriate dress for graduates. "Civilian" dress is also acceptable. Caps and gowns can be obtained from the UNM Bookstore. If you wish to send formal announcements to your family and friends, you can purchase them at the bookstore as well.

Wheelchair access is available. If you need special accommodations such as an interpreter for yourself or your guests or wheelchair access, please contact April Davidson at 505-277-5521.

Maps
Parking map for paid parking around the Convention Center. Primary parking is available at the Convention Center Garage (Martin Luther King Blvd & Broadway), with overflow parking available at the Civic Plaza garage (Marquette & 3rd St.). Event parking in these garages is $6.00 per vehicle, without in/out privileges.

Nanoscience and Microsystems Outreach Event: February 29, 2012

On February 29th from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM, 22 graduate students from the Nanoscience and Microsystems program and affiliated grants/scholarships are going to meet at Bellhaven Elementary School (8701 Princess Jeanne, NE). These graduate students will be hosting a family science night, called "Nano World" for students and families from the school. We will be using kits provided by grant award to the NSMS program by the NISE network (http://www.nisenet.org/nanodays/events) as well as a few tried and true demos not included in the awarded NISE kits. This will be our second year doing the event. Last year we had 14 graduate student participate and over 200 students and family members attend.

New Mexico Cancer Nanoscience and Microsystems Training Center Recruitment Event: February 22, 2012

Come learn more about the The New Mexico Cancer Nanoscience and Microsystems Training Center (CNTC). February 22nd at 12:00 noon in the Stamm room of the Centennial Engineering Center, lunch provided.

KNME's 'Connect' features Nanoscience and Microsystems faculty Jeffrey Brinker

This month, KNME's "Connect" features Jeffrey Brinker, UNM professor in Chemical and Nuclear Engineering, Molecular Genetics and Microbiology. On the cutting edge of materials science, Brinker is developing nanoscale materials for curing cancer, microelectronics and energy harvesting. Connect airs Thursday, Feb.16 at 7:00 PM on KNME 5.1 and Sunday, Feb. 19 at 5:00 PM on KNMD 9.1. Website: http://www.knme.org/connect/

The next CNTC application deadline is March 15, 2012

The New Mexico Cancer Nanotechnology Training Center (CNTC) provides stipends and interdisciplinary training to graduate students and postdocs whose interdisciplinary research uses nanoscience and nanoscience-enabled microsystems to understand the fundamental properties of cancer cells and to discover and develop diagnostic, prognostic and therapeutic tools with potential to reduce suffering and death due to cancer. Students may be enrolled in the Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program on the UNM North Campus or in any of the Physical Sciences and Engineering Programs, including NSMS, on South Campus. Support will be allocated based on the academic qualifications of the student and his/her advisors, the scientific merit of the project, and the likelihood that the fellowship will work as "glue" to enhance interactions between physical and biomedical scientists working at the interface of nanoscience and cancer. Fellowship support is for one year, renewable for a second year based on good progress. Tuition, fees and health insurance will be paid in addition to the stipend.

Applications from minorities and women are encouraged. Postdocs and students who are NOT US citizens MAY apply for these fellowships. CNTC fellows may work at UNM and at partnering institutions, including the Los Alamos and Sandia National Labs. The next CNTC application deadline is March 15 for students seeking fellowship support beginning June 1, 2012. For more information, please see the CNTC How to Apply page.
